It is a composite of cement, lime and silica sand. It is manufactured using the autoclave process. It is a light, high strength, non load bearing material, and can be used in both internal and external walls.

It can be installed quickly, because the blocks are lightweight and can be placed and tapped into place with a rubber mallet. It is also more workable than standard concrete blocks.

They are cheaper than bricks and can be cut into a range of shapes and sizes. They also come in a variety of colors and are able to be stained or painted.

The blocks are laid on a level foundation, and thin-set mortar is applied. They are usually ordered with round cores, typically 3.5 inches (90 mm) in diameter, and are aligned at corners and window and door openings to create a continuous vertical channel or trough into which steel re-bar is placed and concrete is poured – creating a structural bond beam.

They are a bit more brittle than clay bricks, and may crack during installation if they are exposed to rainy weather. However, this can be minimized by reducing the strength of the mortar and making sure that the blocks are dry before installation.
