Superplasticizer is a water reducer that can significantly improve the flow properties of concrete and is commonly used in construction applications. It improves the workability of concrete, reduces permeability and allows for a higher early strength. It also helps with the pumpability of concrete and makes it easier to place the material. It is also known to help with the dispersing of materials like fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag and silica. It can increase the slump for easy placement of the concrete and create denser, more durable concrete mixes. It can also reduce shrinkage and thermal cracking in concrete. It is often used in conjunction with set retarders and air entrainment.
Super plasticizers are made of water-soluble polymer molecules that can be added to concrete and adsorb on the surface of cement particles. The adsorption of the polymer gives the cement particle a negative charge, causing them to repel each other, and eliminating steric hindrance (restraint of intra or intermolecular interaction due to spatial structure of the molecules). This reduces the aggregation of cement particles and significantly improves the flow characteristics of concrete.
Fritz-Pak offers two types of standard superplasticizers: Supercizer PCE and Supercizer 7. They are formulated using the latest chemistry to help with high slump concrete and provide better strength without reducing the water content or lowering the water to cement ratio. These products can be used to correct a concrete mix on site as needed by a civil engineer or in cases where a specific pour is required for high strength and a low slump.
